Our Story.

Our story begins in Sweden, where we've brought mysterious intrigue and sleuthing to the homes of thousands of people over the years, as we have dispatched more than 200,000 letters.

We have struggled a bit to reach the international market, as our business revolved around mysteries by mail. The cost of sending that many letters abroad was simply prohibitive.

The idea was originally born during the pandemic. With people mostly stuck in their homes, a mystery delivered to your door proved quite a successful concept. In fact, it almost proved a little too successful. In our infinite wisdom, we had promised to adorn all the envelopes with authentic wax seals for the premiere. These seals actually made it through the mail intact, but we developed a condition we like to call "wax elbow" in the process of making them. (And our seal stamp overheated so often that we had to get multiple stamps and rotate them in shifts.)

Letters with wax seals
Ah, the early days...

We take pride in our meticulous attention to detail and our commitment to authenticity within reason. Those reasons are mostly practical, as we have found that authentic 19th century handwriting is simply too hard to read. That's why we make sure to print or type some of the content, and use simpler handwriting for the rest.

Handwritten letter
Or can you imagine reading an entire mystery written in this hand?

We do however make sure to use traditionally milled paper where possible, and mimic the look of old documents. Sometimes we are taken by surprise by the language or layout of the time, such as when we researched theatre programmes and found that they were 90% advertisements and 10% actual information. It's actually hard to find an old document without advertisements for patent medicines and miracle cures.

Where the authenticity really shines, however, is in the content. We have a resident writer who has been with us for some time. He has a passion for the Victorian era and has been known to spend hours in the library, poring over old newspapers and police reports. (He's been heard to say that he would love to live in the 19th century if it weren't for the dentistry.) There is only one problem with him: he is a hopeless perfectionist who is never satisfied. So if a product is delayed, now you know why.

For the international market, we make sure to package our mysteries in one box. We are also working on audio versions of our more narrative-driven mysteries, where the box contains some physical clues to help you solve the mystery, but the story is told through audio.

We certainly hope that you will enjoy our effort to bring the thrill of mystery to your doorstep. We are always looking for ways to improve, so if you have any feedback, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at email@oksherlock.com.
